IARS Trustee Meredith C. B. Adams, MD, MS, FASA, FAMIA, and her team at the HEAL CDE program helped set the research standards for the NIH HEAL Initiative for opioid conversion and built vital tools for research.

Associate professor of Anesthesiology, Biomedical Informatics, and Public Health Sciences, at Wake Forest School of Medicine; Director, WF DISC (NIH HEAL Data2Action); Director, IDEA-CC (NIH IMPOWR); Co-Director, NIH MIRHIQL MRC, Dr. Adams and other HEAL-funded researchers recently developed an online calculator for researchers to generate MME values easily from study data. HEAL-funded researchers describe the rationale behind the MME calculator in a new article published in PAIN.

The NIH HEAL Initiative aims to standardize opioid measurement across pain research, enabling cross-study comparisons and statistical analyses that capture legitimate prescription opioid use and change how the field of pain science understands opioid use. This data collection tool is only intended for research purposes and not to be used clinically.
