Moderator: Erin K. Hennessey, MD, MEHP, Professor of Anesthesiology in the Division of Critical Care Medicine, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA Dr. Erin Hennessey is a Professor of Anesthesiology in the Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Virginia. She started her position as the Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia in 2024 after a dedicated career at Stanford University serving in the roles of Program Director for the Anesthesia Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, Clerkship Director for the Critical Care Medicine rotation, and Co-Director of Assessment of Education Research for the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine. She is currently the Immediate Past Chair of the Program Directors Advisory Council for SOCCA and started her first term as a Director on the SOCCA Board in 2024. She also serves on ASA committees dedicated to enhancing both critical care education and education of trainees in addition to serving on the Resident Education Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She completed her Master in Education of Health Professions through the Johns Hopkins School of Education and focused her studies on the effectiveness of milestone-based assessments for ACCM programs and the use of a holistic review rubric to aid in the fellow recruitment models. Her clinical duties at UVA include operating room anesthesiology, anesthesiology preoperative care clinic, cardiothoracic ICU, and surgical ICU. Clinical topics of interest include patient-family interaction in the ICU, communication techniques for hand-offs, procedural training and competency, preoperative optimization, difficult airway management and ventilator management. She is interested in expanding the role of the anesthesiologist to that of a perioperative physician who provides a continuum of care to patients. She is currently teaching at the undergraduate and graduate medical education levels with a keen interest in recruiting competent and compassionate physicians into the field of Critical Care Medicine.
