Recognizing Rising Leaders in Anesthesiology
The Emery N. Brown Early-Career Award highlights exceptional individuals within the first five years of their initial post-training professional appointment. Recipients demonstrate innovation, leadership, and promise in advancing anesthesiology and related scientific fields.
This award honors Dr. Emery N. Brown, whose groundbreaking contributions to statistics, neuroscience, and anesthesiology have transformed interdisciplinary research. The award recognizes emerging leaders whose work embodies curiosity, rigor, and measurable impact in anesthesiology.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be nominated by a departmental chair or the president of a specialty/subspecialty organization (one nominee per department or organization).
- Be within five years of their first post-training appointment in anesthesiology.
- Hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree.
- Be a current IARS member.
- Demonstrate potential to advance anesthesiology research or clinical practice.
Award Benefits
Recipients receive:
- Complimentary registration to the IARS Annual Meeting
- Travel support, including:
- Hotel stay (up to 4 nights)
- Roundtrip economy airfare (up to $1,500)
- Recognition on the IARS website, newsletter, and during the Annual Meeting

- Completed application form
- Curriculum Vitae (2-3 pages)
- Letter of nomination

Terms
Awardees must attend the Annual Meeting in person. Travel and registration arrangements are coordinated with IARS staff, and recipients agree to be recognized in IARS communications.
Award Presentation
Annually at the IARS President’s Lecture, held during the IARS Annual Meeting, marking it as a top honor for emerging talent in the field.
